Norwich City come into this season having just been promoted to the Premier League as second-tier Champions. Their aim is simple – they need to stay up, but can they manage it? Next up on our Premier League preview list is Daniel Farke and his Norwich side!
State of Play
Daniel Farke’s Norwich have one hell of a season ahead of them as they look to eventually cement themselves as a Premier League sides following numerous failed attempts.
In addition to their Championship winning squad, of which they’ve managed to keep the vast majority, they’ve strengthened in key positions. Ralf Fahrmann (Loan) from Schalke, Sam Byram (£747k) from West Ham, Daniel Adshead (£302k) from Rochdale, Josip Drmic (Free) from Borussia Moenchengladbach and Patrick Roberts (Loan) from Man City have all joined up.
In terms of pre-season, Norwich managed an impressive four wins from seven games – including victories over Schalke and Toulouse. The other three matches saw losses to Atalanta and Brentford as well as a score draw with Arminia Bielefield.
Signing of the Summer
For me, the best signing of the summer for Norwich has to be the brand spanking new German stopper, Ralf Fahrmann. Coming on loan from Schalke, he brings experience, quality and adds depth to the goalkeeping position.
With Tim Krul behind him, Norwich have one of the more experienced goalkeeping corps in the league. Krul can teach Fahrmann plenty about the Premier League from his many years at Newcastle but you’d expect the German to be the starter.
As I mentioned at the top, this season is all about staying up for Norwich. Daniel Farke is the latest Canaries boss to be given the challenge of cementing the side in the Premier League – a task which the likes of Paul Lambert and Chris Hughton have failed to achieve before him.
Unfortunately for him, I just don’t see him managing it though. Although I am a fan of Daniel Farke and his managerial style, I just don’t see enough goals in that squad to stay up. I’m also not sure they’ve got the defensive strength to do it either.
There’s always one surprise package in every season and with their manager, Norwich have every chance to be just that – I just don’t see it happening. Sorry Norwich fans, but I think it’ll be one-and-done in the Premier League this time.
